I have a 41 B that I have the head of to get the valves done. Should I put new rings on it if I have it down this far? Besides pulling the pistons what else should I do while its apart? Is honing necesarry? What about crank to connecting rod clearances? This is my first teardown and Im getting really stressed because I have it all tore apart and Im afraid Ill never get it back together. Thanks Al

Was the tractor using oil before dismantling? You should be able to feel how much wear has occurred by running you finger along the top and bottom of the cylinder within an inch or two of the front of the cylinder. Keep in mind that when reboring the cylinders were usually bored in 0.045" steps. If stress is getting to you consider finding a mechanic to help with the reassembly. Offer to be his grease scraper, etc., on one of his projects if finances are tight.

i've found that building the compression back up with a valve job will cause the engine to start using oil unless you put a set of rings in it.. while your that close do it and yes hone the block. my cousin son just got into a b jd and he was worried sick for two weeks, but once he got into it he found out it wasn't all the hard to work on and if you do all your own work when its all said and done you'll be proud of what you've done. get some help if you need it but do most of it yourself. its worht the effort in the reward you'll get from doing the work yourself, even if you never tell a soul you did it all yourself. buy a set of manulas for it, owners, shop and parts book and get er done!

Yea I did get to run it and it did have good compression, the reason the head is off was to grind the valves. It ran fine but being a curious guy and wanting to be more that a fix and paint I tore into her. Also this tractor sat for about 12 years since my grandpa tried to fix it and I think the guy he got it from was starting to fix it. Everything on this tractor was flat worn out and had to be replaced or fixed. It does have .045 pistons in it and a underbore crank. The pistons look almost new and the walls of the cylinder are really clean. So maybe it time for reassembly.

Well if you think it needs them now is the time to do it.

What was the reason for pulling off the head ? and did you have the chance to run this tractor any before that.
