I am putting new rings in a 1945 B. I understand the first 3 rings are to be installed with the dot toward the closed end of the piston. My question is about the fourth ring. It is different from the others. It does'nt have a dot on it, but it is champhered on one end. Does anyone know which way it goes? Also do I need a ring expander or can I just put the rings on by hand. Thank you for your help.

Put the beveled end of the fourth ring toward the top of the piston. You can get by without a ring expander, but be careful because you could easily break a ring installing them.

I have a set of pistons that I removed from a block and the chamfer is towards the top of the piston. You can install the rings without a ring expander. But you need to be careful, new rings will be stiff and test your finger strength.
