MODEL 40S GRILLE

I am about to bring home a 1955 Model 40S and it has a full mesh type grille, like the ones I've seen on all 40U's. Is this correct for an ag tractor? I know this one is not a Utility model. Almost all ag Model 40's I've seen have a divided grille similar to the MT with a cultivator attachment bolt hole in the middle.

The early 40 Standards (I can remember the S/N Break) had the full screen grille. Ive had one with both types. . . Somewhere I remember reading (perhaps in MR. Hobbs' "Little Giants" Book at what point the changeover happened. If I remember Ill go look it up and post it for you.

This tractor is about as original as any I have ever seen, and I don't believe the grille has ever been changed, or even ever removed from the tractor. The S/N is 693XX. I know I have seen both types on the 40S, but never knew if the full screen type was correct or not.

That Explains it. . . The Split started at 69404 according to the book. Your tractor is original.

That's great news. I had hoped it was original. I'm going to pick it up next week. Maybe I'll post some photo's and give a better discription when I get it home. It hasn't been moved or started in several years...I just hope I can make it run again. Thanks for the info.

Either it was swapped from a dozer. Or it's a home built farmer fix.
