My buddy has a 39 JD model A (ser# 484755)that is slinging oil from the crank seal behind the flywheel. How much of a task is it to replace the seals and what other parts are involved??

Not a bad job, especially if it's a hand start tractor. Have a way to support the flywheel when you remove it, it's heavy! The cork seal is under the bearing cover behind the spacer. When you install the new one, be sure to lube the crank to prevent damage to the seal. Use a feeler gage make sure the bearing cover is evenly spaced around the crank. This is a good time to make sure that the drive pin in the flywheel for the spacer is in good shape. If not, replace it. Be sure to put the flywheel back on the same spline, there is a screw in one spline on the crank and a deeper spline in the flywheel that must be lined up. The drive slot in the spacer must be lined up with the drive pin in the flywheel. Then slide the flywheel on and set the endplay at .005-.010. I usually take off the clutch cover and use a jack against the tire to push the crank all the way to the left side of the tractor, it helps setting the end play. You should get new bolts and nuts for the flywheel also. Then tighten it up and you're done. Good luck,
Paul

The only thing I can think to add to that fine description is to go ahead and make your own alignment marks BEFORE you pull it off or at least be sure the factory ones are there and lined up.
