JD 310A won't start

Had something odd happen. Backhoe has started immediately and run great since I bought it 2 months ago. I was using it at my farm this week, dug 250+ ft of trench with no problems.
Had no indication of anything going wrong.

Went to start it in the morning and it acted like an old car that needed the gas-pedal pumped.

Started and ran fine for 2 hours. I shut it off for probably 4 hours, then when I went to start it, it wouldn't do ANY-thing but grind.

Maybe water in the fuel system?

I'm new to diesels and have very little experience, but am fairly capable (mechanic-wise) with the right info.

When I get back up to the farm I'll change the filter and maybe change the fuel pump (original). Is there anything special I need to do in the way of bleeding the fuel lines as if I was replacing the injector pump?

I'm not sure what you mean by the word 'grind'. But if you are refering to merely cranking over without starting you may first want to check the wire connectors for the fuel shut off on the top of the injector pump. Take the wire off and clean the connectors and test the wire it to be sure the is a full 12 volts present with the ignition switch in the run position. Clean the ground also. These connectors are exposed to the weather and I suspect your machine was built around 1979 or there abouts. So it's about time the connectors were cleaned up anyway.

You might check the fuel shut-off valve at the bottom of the tank..Been known to plug up..Once you change the filters , you might have to bleed the injector lines by loosening them at the injector about 1 turn , crank it over till you see a little bit of fuel there ..Then tighten them back up ..If all's well , it should start..If not , Let us know..I'm sure someone here will have an answer for you..

Thanks for the help and advise folks! Appreciate it.

Caught up to a buddy last night and he said basically the same thing ... except that there might be TWO filters, one canister and the other some kind of a glass front one. Said either water in the fuel, or it could also be the fuel shutoff solenoid.

When I get back up to the farm in 2 weeks (up state NY, 350 miles from here) I'll letcha know.

OK ... just got back and it while it was bad, it wasn't water and/or filter. The solenoid was getting juice, and you could hear the clicking, but still wasn't opening.
