When replacing the seals on the lift arms shaft, I slid the shaft to one side. Now I can't slide the shaft back. I think the pistons have moved when the fluid drained down. Do I have to pull the back of the TOM off now to re-align the shaft with the piston rods?

Yep I think that the thing that Dave is talking about that the shaft slides into is called a crank. My luck is that the crank drops down and I couldn't figure a way to get the shaft to line up with the hole without taking the back off.

its not that bad drain your fluid . pull your back off there are two hair pins on the pegs inside the housing that you can reach with needle nose plyers slip the rods off and lay it down then put the shaft back together ,the only thig you might need is a new gasket ,you can get it from deere about 5 bucks I ave tryed gasket sealer and making my on gaskes they always leak later good luck

If youve not pulled the shaft too far out you may still have hope. The shaft slides thru a "donut" like piece that runs the pistons. . . its the best way I can describe it. The Donut has splines on the inside of it. . . the shaft has splines on the outside of it. If the shaft is still thru the donut and you can rotate the shaft to the point where the splines will intermesh (there is one master spline so the shaft will only go thru at a certain point) you can push the shaft thru. This happened to me on my 430 Standard with Dual TOM. Dave.

Do you have a dual tom? If so you have one rock shaft hollow and one that runs thru the center. It sounds like to me that you have a dual and you pulled the outer tube (Rt I think) out to where the splines disengaged fron the crank for that half of the tom. If so i don't have any suggestions on short cuts.

By the way, you just cannot pull the back (rock shaft housing off) because of stud pins that fit down into the rear tranny housing. Trust me on that one, the whole tom has to be raised to get the pins out of the holes on the tranny housing.

Well I wish I had better news.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. It is a dual TOM, and your right on having to remove the whole unit from the top of the trans. This is one of those times when you wonder how replacing a $2.00 seal could cause this much grief. I should have listened to that little voice that said "probable not a good idea to pull this shaft too far out"!
