Hello Everyone-

I am having issues with getting the clutch to disengage on my 1946 A. Let me tell you what I have done so far. I have had all of the opperating mechnism reworked. New bushings in the "fork bearing" and new pins and everything so it's all good and tight. I have replaced both clutch disks or "free facings" I have replaced all of the clutch dogs with new ones. I am sure that the bearing fork is in the groove where it belongs. My "clutch drive" has been broken and was welded at some point. "pulley bearing is very loose. I tighten the 3 adjusting screws and I can get the tractor to move for a a short ways and then the nuts are very loose again. I don't hve any cotter keys in the holes yet because I have been adjusting things. I hope that I have described everything well enough. Your thoughts please!

Joe

It will NEVER stay put without cotter pins in place !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

Put some in and try it again. I like to tighten those nuts up with an old beam type torque wrench so you can get them all even. Only about 10-15 ft. lbs.needed usually.

Make sure the clutch driver is in all the way and the bolt isn"t loose also.

On my 52 A the operating bolt threads were worn such that the adjusting nut wouldn't bite. Did you try running it with the cotter keys in the bolts?

Is the crankshaft endplay correct? If the flywheel moves on the crankshaft and the endplay gets all out of wack when you pull the clutch lever back it can pull the crankshaft to the right side of the tractor instead of disengaging the clutch.

Does the clutch driver press on TIGHT to the crankshaft?

End play is a possibility. How does one adjust it? The clutch driver does indeed press on the shaft tight. We used heat and a puller to remove it. Thanks for the suggestions!

You can adjust the endplay by loosening the flywheel bolts and sliding the flywheel toward the tractor. Depending on how clean the crankshaft splines are, you may need a block of wood and a hammer to move the flywheel. I usually shoot for about .010" endplay.
