I have no power at the starter. It worked fine one second and then not the next. No burned or smoking wires. I replaced the starter switch, didn't help. Is there any thing in the starter that could cause this? My battery is good. Need to get this running. Thanks, Mark

Thanks for all your help. I think it is a grounding issue or my battery is completely dead. I will have it tested tomorrow and get a new one if needed. One of these things should get it resolved. Mark

I have a '51 B that gave me the same problem. I had the starter out many times. Bench tested it and it worked like a champ. Put it back in and nothing. I rebuilt it also. I checked the ground from the battery to the battery box. That was all good. Then my brother pointed out the connection of the battery box to the frame of the tractor. Took the battery box off and it was painted so I sanded it off and put some oil on it to keep from rusting, installed battery box, battery and starter and I haven't had an issue since. She cranks like a dream. Just another idea.

I had that transient problem on my JD50. Turned out to be the starter. Hated to take it out 3 times but rebuilding fixed it. Easy

Sounds like you might have lost your ground. You might check your ground battery cable to see what might be going on. If you have a multimeter you can check your ground wire by placing one probe on the neg battery terminal (if it is neg ground) and the other probe anywhere on the tractor chassis.

Are you sure that the starter switch is getting depressed far engough to make the contacts touch? It's always the simple things that seem to get us by the collar.

I tell you all this because you say you are not getting power to the starter. If in fact you are actually getting power to the starter it could be a little problem with your starter.

Be sure to take the main battery cable loose from the starter and make sure it is got a good contact. Also check the battery ends too. Surprizing how many times we forget these get corroded overtime.
