I have an 8650 tractor with engine trouble that I need to get out of the field. It recently ate a part of the turbo charger so its not running. Im trying to figure out a way to make it steer so I can pull it home about 10 miles. Does anyone know a clever way to make it steer. I had planned using hydraulics from the pulling tractor and connect to steering valve in front of the cab but not sure if that would work. Lost wheat crop this year and trying to get by as cheap as I can. Any help is appreciated.

hello, i have been in a DEERE shop 40 years. i built a tow hitch out of scrap, using an old plow hitch bar to fit your 3 point and box tube & 2 angle braces. hook up a 4020 or larger depending on terrain and u can tow this baby anywhere u want, even back it into a shop bay slick as a whistle. done that several times. you may need to loosen the lines on steering cylinders so it will articulate. keep three pt. sway to a minimum.

You guys have all been a great help. I also called Deere and they told me it can be towed through C&D but to make sure it's locked into position. They also said the only way they've moved them that way is connecting pressure directly to the steering cylinders from the pulling tractor. They didnt seem to have much advice other than that. Im going to try it but carefully watch what it does while its still in the field. If it does okay then we'll go for it. If it makes me nervous I'll just bite it and have someone come out and get it. Any other year it wouldnt matter but this one and the year before has about taken its tole. Definetly hit a stroke of bad luck. Next message may be a farm for sale. I really do appreciate all the suggestions and your time. I'll give you all a follow up later. Big Thanks....

I think the cost of trucking it 10 miles will be far cheaper than tearing up more high $$$$ parts!!! Then there's the liability problem if an accident happens while towing. Farthest I'd tow a New Generation JD is off the road. Tx Jim

We need some help here folks. I don't think an 8650 has a notch in the lower shift cam between "C" and "D" - {it doesn't have a tow position}

The last thing Allen1970 needs is a melted transmission top shaft to go along with the sore engine. I'm just not sure since it has been awhile since I've had one apart.

Checked the manual today- they do have a tow position. You start out by placing the shift lever between C and D. Then you gotta unhook the cable from the shift arm and move a bolt to lock the arm in position. It's hard to explain without a picture. One other thing I though of- how much oil flows from the steering hand pump, down the return line, and into the charge circut? My concern is that if he hooks a hose from the tow tractor to the steering valve in the manner I described above, he could eventually drain the tow tractor's hyd oil into the 8650 through the steering return line. I suppose the solution would be to run a hose from the steering return back to the tow tractor, but I'm not sure if there's enough flow going through that return line for this to be a concern.

The high pressure line off of the main pump goes to a priority valve. There should be two lines off of the priority valve, one going up to the steering valve and brake valve, and the other going back to the rockshaft/SCV's. Disconnect the line that goes up to the steering valve and connect a hose to it, connect other end of hose to tow tractor's SCV, tie tow tractor's SCV lever back. This SHOULD work and give you steering and brakes, provided tow tractor is a Deere, wouldn't work too well with older IH or similar open-center system, as tow tractor's system would stay on high pressure. Sorry I can't be more detailed, but I don't work on too many 4-wheelers newer than the 40 series, and I know that the 50 series 4- wheelers had a few hyd. system differences. Make sure to take the appropriate precautions for towing, such as making sure the 8650's shift lever is in the tow position, make sure it has plenty of trans fluid, have the flashers on, take it as slow as possible, take a break every mile, and make darn sure this works before hitting the road. Plan on this being an all day job. I really don't recommend towing something like this that far, but I know what trucking costs and I know what it's like to be in a bind.
