27 D fan backlash.

Just wondering if anybody can tell me how much backlash there should be in the fan-govenor gears. I have removed all the shims (gaskets) between the gov housing and the fan shaft bearing holder and while holding the gov shaft stationary, I can move the fan at the end of the blades, 5/8". Thanks

Ken -- The amount of backlash that you should have won't be a fixed amount because of wear over the years. The gear teeth aren't shaped like they were back in the early days! Bringing them closer together trying to reduce backlash can and often does result in almost instant demise! You will then dig deep!

As for the "book amount", backlash is to be from 0.004 to 0.006 thousandths (some references say 0.004 to 0.007 thousandths), and Deere interpreted this requirement for its service men as a specified amount of free travel at the end of the fan blade while holding the governor shaft fast. The translated requirement is between 1/4 and 3/8-inch. This is a SERVICEABLE GEAR requirement! Some would call it a NEW GEAR requirement. This value shows up in Field Service Bulletins 87-S (7/15/38) and 113-S (9/15/40).

Now -- for a full and expanded discussion on this issue, I refer you to the JD-H Restoration Site (below), and whence there, look left & scroll down to GOVERNORS. The first page or two is peculiar to the JD-H governor, but discussion soon becomes generic to John Deere Governors. Its a good read! Just the fact that you asked this question AND have backlash down to 5/8-inch (dangerously low for an old gear set), tells me you MUST read this piece. (PatB)
