4020 PTO Noise

Just picked up a pretty nice "66 4020 gasser and didn"t notice this noise when I looked at it earlier before buying.

I have the tractor hooked a 7" rotary mower (not sure of the shaft length as I write this). Everything seems fine until I engage the PTO. There"s a noise (gear whine is best I can describe). Its not really constant but rather seems to occur on a revolution of something.

I"ll unhook the mower tommorrow and run the PTO to see if it is still there.

But, is there anything else I should be looking at?

I"ll also post a video (with sound) to youtube or someting too.

with the 540 shaft, what is the correct pto shaft length for a 4020

thanks!

there will be some whine which is normal. but it could be a gearbox on your mower that is low or out of oil. check your mower gearbox oil and tractor hyd/trans oil level

Thanks for the reply!

I did unhook the mower and ran the PTO, and didnt hear anything abnormal...but the noise is from the tractor, not the mower

hyd oil level looks fine...do you know what the pto shaft length should be? could that attribute?

thanks,
john
