BAT on VR wires to the load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter

FLD on VR wires to gennys Field post (often smaler of the two)

ARM/GEN on VR wires to gennys Arm post (often larger of the two)

On a 4 terminal VR the LOAD terminal feeds hot battery input voltage to loads like lights n ignition usually via the BAT input terminal on the switches.

NOTE if it had a 4 terminal VR which was replaced with a 3 terminal VR, the wire that used to go to LOAD on the VR may have been swapped over to BAT on the VR (still works that way)

Determine which VR you have, wire it accordingly POLARIZE the genny n see what happens. The tractor was originally Positive ground you know !!!!! !!!

Something to check first is to get the correct diagram or wiring schematic for your tractor. Then verify by run, not only by wire color that your wiring is correct. Make sure you have a good working VR or a new one that is the right voltage and polarity for your tractor. Your generator should have markings on the two posts. F-Field and A-Armature. Those two have leads that should go to the VR-Voltage Regulator. Field will be marked on one VR termainal with an F. Armature wire will go to the terminal most likely marked with Gen if I'm not mistaken. The other terminal should be marked with a BAT. This wire will be the heavy guage wire going to your amp guage more than likely. Sometimes you will have an additional wire coming from the light switch and it will be doubled up on the Bat terminal with the amp guage wire or will be on the load terminal if you are using a 4 terminal VR. Don't trust wire color unless you know the harness is original or you have verified the wire run. If you know your generator is good, a way to verify with everything hooked up is to momentarily ground your field wire and you should get a full positive charge on the amp guage. Some people polarize them with the tractor running and others without them running. So double check your procedure for that as well. If the generator begins charging with the wrong polarity at startup, the cutout/regulator will likely get it's points welded together, then drain the battery and overheat/let the smoke out of the generator at shutdown.

Polarizing BEFORE initial startup prevents this!
