Got a 2640, early model. Batteries went dead suddenly. I put in new batteries, checked voltage at alternator output terminal, 12.6 with engine running wide open, idiot light not lit. Made the long drive to the dealer, only had the alternator along as I was not aware that these have a regulator under the dash. Alternator put out 14 volts on test stand, 0 amps, suddenly amp guage kicked in and it showed 40 amps. Dealer wasn't sure if it was a problem with the amp guage on there stand. Bought a rebuilt alternator anyway, and a new regulator. Installed on tractor, now have 13.1 volts running wide open. Is this normal? I was expecting 14.5 volts.

Output voltage often varies with air temperature. During winter batteries need a high voltage to charge that would boil over the same battery in summer. As previously stated. Take the system voltage reading with the batteries 100% charged.

How long did you let it run? If the batteries are very low it may take a little while to get the voltage up.

I think 14.2~14.5 would be more like it? 13.1 sounds too low to me.
