3020 lp backfires and dies at full throttle

I have a friend who owns a 1967 JD 3020 lp with powershift. This tractor runs fine until you open the throttle past the stop, and within a few minutes will begin to backfire and will eventually die (especially if under load). Sometimes you can get it to keep running if you pull the throttle back to idle as soon as you feel it bogging down. Otherwise, you have to wait a while and then it will start right back up and run fine. It has an aftermarket regulator on it but has a new kit in it. Could this be because the fuel is freezing up? Why would it backfire so bad then (it blows oil out of the precleaner and all over the hood)? Also, this tractor starts hard even for a LP. Any help would be appreciated.

My 4020 manual prescribes a specific procedure for starting and running that if neglected could cause these symptoms.

As I recall (my gas tractor doen't need this attention to detail) one is ssuppoed to start the tractor with the gas valve open and the liquid valve closed. Then operate the tractor lightly loaded until its warmed up, then open the liquid valve and close the gas valve because by then the vaporizer is making gas from liquid and the gas from the tank alone isn't sufficient to supply full power.

To shut down, one closes the liquid valve and runs it until it stops to be sure to use up all the vaporized gas. Then starts on gas again.

Running with the gas valve open and the vaporizer not working, it won't get enough gas to run any where near full power because the environmental heat to the tank won't vaporize liquid rapidly enough. Which are your symptoms. It could be that the liquid plumbing is clogged or the vaporizer isn't seeing enough water system heat from a thermotat stuck open or some failure in the vaporizer.
