John Deere 318 clutch

Just had a new starter and a tune up done by a local repair shop. Everything was working good until one day about 1/2 hour after mowing, the blades just stopped turning. Husband thought it might be the clutch so we bought a used one and he installed it. Everything again seemed to be fine but the blades stopped going again. (after mowing about 1/2 hour) My husband used a feeler gauge to set the air gap to the specs that the person from whom we bought this clutch suggested. Any suggestions? Anyone know the correct air gap setting on the clutch for this garden tractor? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

My husband will try turning the air gap down a bit and see if it helps. The guy we bought the clutch from suggested this too. Will post again if this works.

Is there still current flowing through the clutch magnet windings when the drive stops? What is the current measured through the clutch and the applied voltage?

On my 318 the clutch worked fine when it was cold, but when it got hot it stopped working. I think the cause was the magnet gets a bit weaker when it was hot, so by turning the 3 adjusting nuts in on the clutch 1/2 turn it started working perfectly again.

My husband has tryed so many settings for the air gap and now today bought some self locking nuts. He cut the grass for about 40 minutes, amazingly the blades were still on but when he shut the tractor down and then turned it on again, the blades wouldn't go on. Could it be any thing other then the air gap setting. Someone suggested testing the voltage but I don't think he has tools for that. Help!!
