Trying to remove pump on a 3010 diesel. The shop manual shows timing marks you line up in a inspection window on the pump. I don't seem to have a mark on the pump shaft like the picture shows, but there is one on the housing. Also cant find a mark on the flywheel in it's window. Any of you deere guys run into this before? Could I not just make my own mark on the pump shaft and install it in the same place? thanks in advance.

Quick and easy method of pump removal and installation. Just take it out. Don't worry about timing it first and will save you a lot of time turning the flywheel as you may possibly have just passed #1 TDC.

Then on reinstallation, look down in on top of the oil pump drive for a vee mark. Number 1 TDC is when the vee(^) mark is about 11 o clock as viewed looking down in the hole. Reinstall the pump and then turn the flywheel ( ^ up) to the proper timing mark which should be close at hand.Make sure to turn it (up) far enough to take out any backlash. If you need to turn it backward, be sure that you turn it enough so when you turn in (up) you will have removed any backlash as well. Check with the rebuilder as to the proper timing. That depends on which governor weight retainer the pump has and whether the pump has had a timing advance kit installed in it. If it still has the old original static timed set up(which I seriously doubt) then it will time at 10 degrees BTDC. The pump drive shaft is cut off center so pay attention to how it goes back in the drive slot in the oil pump. Also be sure there is still a spring in the bottom of the oil pump hole.

I just had mine rebuilt. There was a mark on the end of the shaft the mark look like this >. But the end of the shaft is offset a little, there is only one way that it will fit.

Hayfarmer,I beg to differ with you on a pin dropping in hole on a 3010. JD engines didn't start that on rowcrops till the 30 series suchas 4430 except for 2510 and 2520 tractors which used Dubuque engines. On pump removal one must find tdc on #1 on flywheel or the engine will be very difficult to get running correctly. Sometimes the mark in pump is very hard to see. Tx Jim

could have sworn I used the pin on 3020 and 4020s and a different one on smaller models. It has only been about30 years since I worked for JD though so possibly my memory has slipped.

There should be a mark you can line up in the timeing window on pump shaft. The flywheel has a small hole in it that a pin from the line up tool drops into when it is in the proper location. As I remember you open a hole on the right side of the flywheel behind the injection pump. I have seen the pumps go bad to where the shaft isn't turning and you can't the the timing mark to show. I can't remember the configuration of the drive end of the shaft, I think there was only one way they would go in.
