Hi Bob, I was wondering if you would be the guy with the answer. This is the same one that you tried to help on the gov. problem which wound up being the low idle setting, fat boy turned the idle screw all the way in and threw off the gov. The original switch would would lose power in the run position causing the tractor to die.I wiggled the switch and it came back on but let enough power go through to burn out the solenoid switch. The problem is that I know very little about -ground 12v systems there are 6 prongs on the orig. switch and the universal one only has the 4 and I haven't figured the wiring out.it is a 1965 1010 RUS if you need the ser.# I will get it tomorrow in the daylight. On the back of the orig. switch there was a diode of some sort very small maybe a fuse.

The four terminal switch will only accept power, supply the starter solenoid circuit, ignition & switch a main supply for all accessories. There is absolutely no way on earth to control lights from a four terminal universal switch. Unless you want lights on any time the engine is running?

thanks I looked at the wires the ones that were confusing me were to the lights but I want them on a switch that gets its power from the ign.I am going to redo the wires some are rotten or burnt.I want to make it a simple wire job. Not being sure of the basics of the +ground 12v system I'm thinking the only thing I need to do is -switch power to the gen.,coil, and voltage reg. Also I need direct -feed to the starter and -start feed to the solinoid switch of course all grounds are +.As I have seen Bob state before I don't want to let the smoke out of these parts because the gen. is fairly new rebuilt "not a cheep rebuild" but high quality should last a long time.If I should happen to let the smoke out I will probably change it to a GM 1 wire 12v +ground but I would like to keep the orig. equipment on it.

If you save a couple of bucks purchasing a "fits all switch". You will be back here wondering where to connect the wires.

The generator and regulator don't give a rat's butt WHAT ignition switch you use.

You neglected to tell us if it's a diesel or a gasser, and what the serial number is.

IIRC, certain DEERE GAS tractors have the ignition ballast resistor built into the ignition switch. If your's happens to be one of those, NOT using the correct ignition switch could be a problem.

Wanna post back with the rest of the details, or leave us guessing???
