A couple of weeks ago I finally got done with the work I had planned for my 4020. I still need to paint the rear wheels, fenders, and seat mounts. That will have to wait for the fall, after hay season. I did learn my painting skills will require a lot of work! The hood was a replacement from deere several years ago and still looks good. I didn't paint it but the rest of the sheet metal will be redone in the fall. This is the first time I have actually painted anything large with a gun. I'm waiting on decals too.

thanks jason--one guy in archives said
8 oz per quart, another said 50/50 mix which would
agree with your retrospective wish too thin the
paint more. i hope mine turns out half as good as
yours.

5020,

This was my first time painting and I did learn alot! I used JD paint with JD thinner which I think is Xylol. I thinned per the instructions on the can. I think, 8 oz to the quart. I used the same ratio of hardener. I was painting outside in a pretty good breeze and the sun shining. The paint was drying way too fast. I should have thinned more and set the gun to blow more paint. It just didn't flow and level off.

I'm going to repaint at least the sheet metal parts this fall. I'm sure I can do a better job.

Good luck with your project!

What kind of finish did you put on your exhaust manifold? Looks nice. How hard was it to remove without breaking studs? Thanks.

Sodly,

Actually, I didn't remove the manifold but I did spend about an hour masking off the block to paint it. I wire wheeled it and wiped it down with laquer thinner. I use John Deere Muffler black paint. It holds up to the heat very well. After painting the manifold, I masked off the manifold from the block to shoot the green. Turned out really nice and up close it does look like I removed. It takes a lot of time and a lot of short pieces of masking tape...

I'm not so happy with my green painting but the manifold and dash turned out real nice!
