I am reassembling my 1950 John Deere "B" and have painted each part individually.

What is the best way to solve the problem of unpainted edges of exposed gaskets in the ressembly process? The first example of this occurred when I installed the differential quills. I removed the quill gasket on the pulley side and hand painted the edge and a bit on each surface with JD Classic Green. I know some restorers will trim the gaskets back so they do not show easily and, of course, the problem would be solved if one gave the tractor an additional coat of paint after assembly. I'm still undecided about an additional coat of paint since everything looks so great as is.

I'm looking for suggestions. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Ken, I don't know if its the best way,"everybody does it different" but I try to assmble as much as possible before the final coat of paint. If its a "hard to get paint on part" I will "cut it in" or paint the hard to reach spots before assembly. Once assembled I will trim the gaskets back to the edge of the castings with a utility knife or exacto knife.Then if I don't think the regular paint job will put enough paint on the edges of gaskets or back side of bolts ETC. I will brush paint on these areas with a "FINE- LINE" brush just prior to the paint job. On the parts that must be assmbled after painting I will touch-up with a "FINE-LINE" brush. If you want it to look original "paint it assmbled"
