Whenever the tractor is at low idle and then you pat the throttle, she will puff a small bit of white smoke. Burns clean under normal range and various loads, only happens after throttling from a low idle. Is this more likely to be caused by excess fuel not burning clean. I haven't found any waterleaks nor have I seen any bubbles in the radiator(clue for blown headgasket?). I know that there was a problem in the injector pump. A washer detoriated and had clogged up the return line elbow(small check valve inside) coming off the pump and going to the tank. I have cleaned this several times and it definetly runs good for a while. Could the pump still be clogging up internally. How can I make sure to get all of the trash out. Could air being sucked in from a bad oring or gasket seal also cause the white smoke. Should I pull the injectors and lines for a more thorough cleaning. Any thoughts, comments, or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If you have lost throttle control, as you state, the governor retainer drive ring is completely gone. The pieces of this is what are pluging the fitting, and it should be fixed. With the ring gone this lets the drive studs run together metal to metal, and at best will wear until more parts have to be replaced. At worst the studs will wear all the way off, and the engine will reach about 6000 rpm before a rod comes through the block. Oring kit, with retainer drive ring $24.95, new style rivited govenor retainer about $40 and is a permanent cure. Try to do the work yourself and save $300 -$400. The old 530 case IT manual has pump break down.[same pump different color]

How long ago was the pump rebuilt? It should last 3-4000 hrs. before the wt. retainer ring goes again. Before you pull the pump, try this: With the engine running, crack open the bleeder screw on the filter. Fuel should squirt out. If it doesn't, or if it sucks air in, your transfer pump is bad-looks like a car fuel pump,r.h. side of engine. It will make the engine do what you said, and it's a lot cheaper than the inj. pump.

Ronm, I am not sure when the pump was last rebuilt. I bought this tractor in sept 98. Still trying to get everything fixed. I have 2 filters before the pump. Bleed both or one at a time? How would the transfer pump create the symptoms? Does it serve to step up or step down fuel to the inj pump?

Doesn't matter where you open a bleeder, you can loosen the fitting on the line from filter to pump, also. The transfer pump pushes fuel thru the filters to the inj. pump at about 3-5 psi-the Roosa-Master pump can't suck fuel, it has to be force-fed. No tranfer pressure will cause erratic gov. action & speed change like you described. One other thing you should do is take the line from the tank to the tranfer pump off & make sure fuel is flowing FREELY from the tank- a turd in the tank will cause these same troubles.

My guess is that your injectors are not vaporizing the fuel as good as they should and that causes an excess of unburned fuel in the cylinders at idle(when the heat of combustion is down). When you crack the throttle this fuel goes right up the stack. If it was antifreeze you could smell it in the exhaust really easily.

I don't think that it's anything to worry about. White smoke may be cause by injection pump being out of time or the engine is low on somewhat low on compression. Or like others have stated. when you say a washer went bad in the pump are you sure it's not the governor ring? This goes bad often and then causes a plugged return line. You can take the three screws out of the top of the pump and remove the top cover to see if you have alot of rubber pieces. Also you may want to check the pump timing.

Thanks for the information, I wasn't sure if that was a washer or what is was called. I figure the particles are still trying to get worked out of the pump. Does this ring help to control the pump. I feel the pump definitely needs a rebuild because every once in a while the engine will rev up with out toughing the throttle. Then you have to keep messing with it so it will throttle down. Any estimates for a rebuild?

Yes, You need a rebuild. Often times that's what happens. Rev the throttle quickly and that usually gets them back under control. It's not something you want to leave running unattended!!!
As far as pump rebuild cost, I'm not real sure I know it's going to be at least several hundred.

Do not neglect the injectors either. Diesels need tuned up. I think JD recommends every 500 hours. When I buy a diesel that I do not know the history I get the valves adjusted and the injectors checked. A poor pattern can damage the engine. I use premium fuel and filter it and have very little pump problems. We run our 4230 13000 hours and it worked fine. Overhauled the engine and worked the pump just because!
