I was wondering if an early styled A used most of the same parts as a late styled A. I have a 1942 electric start and I know a guy that has some late model A parts and I was wondering what the likely hood would be that I could use some of them. The parts I need are

Radiator upper water neck or the whole radiator
Head
governor
fan shaft or gear exhaust manifold

Thanks for your help

parts books are very little help ..I've got a 37 unstyled "A" with a clutch off a 51 model...also has 53 model 60 main bearing housing & bearing...I know these parts # don't match up but my tractor runs just fine with them..it also has starter & flywheel off a 46 model & axles out of a 51 model...so much for parts books ...Kent

God don't let some of the people on this site hear that they think that part book is never wrong

The parts book is right a lot more often than the "free" advice offered on this site!!

There's NO WAY some of that stuff was a direct fit with no additional modifcations needed.

A cutting torch and a welder, drill and bits, tap and die set and you can bolt on alot more stuff than was originaly on there.

Mike, The parts Kent listed as fitting on his '37 A should bolt on with no modifications. There are a lot of obvious changes throughout the A-630 series, there are also quite a few parts that will in fact bolt on and be functional even though the interchangeability is not shown in the parts book. For instance, My '41 A has an unstyled axle housing, but with 15 spline axles. I'm also shortly going to have an arrest warrant put out by the correct police for converting a '49 A to a long hood with parts from a '45 A. None of that is in the parts book either. Mike

Forgive me if I'm wrong. BUT I'm pretty sure that even if the 60 main bearing housings directly bolt onto an unstyled A the housings are going to need drilled and tapped to accept adapters for the oil lines to screw into them. I'm pretty sure a 60 main oil is supplied through the main case which has the fitting attached and a packing washer seals it up. I might be wrong ? But if I look in a 60 parts book it will set me straight !

The 60 main bearing housing is a direct bolt on part to the 37 ...I have it on mine the only change you have to make is the oil feed line has to be rerouted...I did this so I could use a one piece main bearing instead of the two piece thats needs shimming it also has the new style thrust washers...this is on a 37 unstyled pulling tractor with 6.5 X 9.25 B&S....Kent

Remember, the reason we can get away with that is the parts ARE IN the parts book, just on different pages with different SN's next to them than the parts that "are supposed to be" on the tractor.

The head will work, and actually will help the compression some.

The manifold will work with an exhaust pipe with the correct flange orientation(early-bolts are flat, late-bolt pattern at angle).

The late governor oils different than the early one. On the fanshafts, the late one has the vent pump, so I dont think it would work w/ a governor designed not to use a vent pump(early governor). I would try to get another early fanshaft/governor off the same tractor so you get a set of gears that are worn together. If you mix/match the fanshaft/governor gears they may wear funny.

I think the radiator should work.

Josh -- This is a question to which the answers lie in your Part Catalog PC675. Do the research by part number! Surely, I woouldn't want to rely on forum answers to questions such as these!

Now if you lack the PC 675 and want others to do your work for you -- say so. You never know -- there may be someone out there with more time than good sense!

And if you do lack the PC675 -- buy one! They are available through JD Dealers and from JD PUbs (800) 522-7448. Never open up a tractor without it!
