Smooth side of head gasket?

I purchased a new head gasket for a style G from John Deere and my manual says to install it with the smooth side toward the block. The problem is, I can't tell which side is the smooth one. It looks and feels the same on both sides. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Look at the area that surrounds the cyl. bore. Called the fire ring. one side is smooth and the other is where it was roll crimped together. Put this smooth side to the block and the crimped side to the head.
