My A has just started having the above described problem. I pulled it out to spray some dirt off and it started first crank, like normal. I drove to the hose and shut it down. Sprayed it off, did not directly hit mag (WICO X or XB, has ground post) but it got wet nonetheless. Now it is hard to start but when it does start it runs well for 5 minutes and the starts missing badly (black smoke) and dies in 1-2 minutes. It seemed like a spark problem so it now has new wires and plugs but same situation. It appears to be in the mag (bad coil?) so if somebody more knowledgeable than me in magnetos could help me I would really appreciate it.

Happy father"s day and Thank You.

First of all, A Wico XB is a battery powered coil ignition while the X is a Magneto. If theres just a grounding kill stud/button out the side and NO WIRES attached its an X Mag. If theres a stud that has a wire that voltage is on when some sort of a switch or key is ON its an XB distributor

REGARDLESS I would remove the cap and use a hair dryer etc and thoroughlly clean n dry everything out, check point gap n non abrasively clean/buff/polish them n see what happens. I prefer the use of wire core plug wires NOT carbon core suppressor types

I know it is a magneto becuse I obviously don't have a battery on this tractor. I just didn't know the 100% correct name. It has the grounding post/stud and I have it hooked to an on off switch that just grounds to the frame. It worked fine before all the problems occured. I'll try drying it out.

Thanks

Definitely sounds like there is a little moisture in the mag. They will start and run, but once the air inside the mag starts heating up, the moisture in it tends to condense on the still-cool cap and gives the spark all kinds of easy paths to take to places it shouldn"t be going.

And now that it has had a chance to arc and short within the mag cap, check that cap for carbon tracking....
