Adding a front end loader to 4020

I have a 65 4020 synchro with a heneker cab and only a single remote. I"m wanting to mount a Westerndorff WL42 FEL with a joystick. What is the advisable way to tap into the tractor hydraulic supply in order to supply the joystick valve, and does JD make any regular fittings that allow for one to do so?
Thank you.

Isn't there a shop out there that converts later & larger model JD 2WD front axles. To fit under 4020's that are equiped with loaders?

IF YOU ADD THE LOADER TO THE SCVS YOU CANT GET THE FEEEL ON THE LOADER. WE TRIED IT ON OUR 2030 AND YOU CANT FEEL THE LOADER AT ALL. WHY DONT YOU JUST GET A JOHN DEERE LOADER. THEY WILL FIT YOUR 4020 BETTER. NICK FAILLA

Thanks for the options guys, I"ll check into the flow requirements on the loader. It seems as if the advisable route is to tap into the supply at one of the three mentioned points, and return to the oil filter.

All three schemes will make the loader work. For me I need the remote for running implements and I don't want to take the loader off just to go pull a planter or something, so that makes using the remote far too unhandy. I liked the outside tap point running to my manifold for both loader and back hoe with flow restrictors on both to keep them easy to operate and its been working for several years. I think getting to the SCV valve up under the hood is more bother, I have no hoses until the actual hose going to the loader with my scheme. The manifold is all hard plumbing all rated for at least 3000 psi.

A 148 IS a Deere loader.

Thanks very much, you guys, the explanations are clearing things up for me. Bob, I do have a 3 point, so your tap idea makes imminently good sense to me, including the safety aspect.
I have another question that just occurred to me: I don't use the remote (SCV), so is it possible to simply plug the joystick into the single remote with two long hoses and obtain both supply and return from there, or am I missing the boat entirely? Cheers - Alan

One downfall to plugging into the back, is that you won't have as much flow. I believe that the early model 4020 only flows about 7 gallons from the rear outlet.

True, I think my shop manual says set to 5 seconds for stroking an 3" diameter x 8" stroke cylinder. That works out close to 5 GPM. For the MF-236 loader I'm using that is a handy flow rate. I don't have to feather the valves all the time to keep from jerking the loader about.

My 148/158 manual doesn't specify the size of the cylinders but they look to be even smaler than those on the MF-236 so 5 gpm is plenty flow in my opinion. I used the flow restrictor valves on my set up for that reason. I had a 22 gpm PTO pump when the loader was on my MF-135 and it was hard to operate because the flow was too great. After that pump was stolen I put on a crankshaft driven 5 gpm pump and it was plenty. Those were open center systems.

Using the remote that way is mentioned in the 148/158 manual. Requires tying the remote handle so it doesn't trip the latch with high pressure.

Should work, I want to use other hydraulics while the loader is mounted, so I did the tap.

Sorry, Bob, I had a mental short circuit. I meant to say yes, I do have 3 pt, but your idea of tapping under the hood makes sense to me.

Once again, thanks to all of you for your input. This forum is heaven sent for novices like me.

Cheers - Alan

third party image

The elbow changed to a T down by the brake pedals works fine for me. I included a flow restrictor valve for both my loader and my back hoe to slow them for more convenient operation. That may already be a part of the 158 valve and plumbing.

My 148/158 manuals don't show the tapping parts for the early 4020, only for the later 4020 and later tractors.

I went the route of having JD parts look up that elbow and had to special order the fitting to match. It didn't fit. The place I ordered through bought the wrong one first so they won't take this one back.

To get the right part, I took the elbow (turned ut to be 3/4 O-ring to the tractor and 3/4 male JIC to the three point) and matched up a stock fitting from the JD Dealer's stock.

The official cover for the oil filter return is from a 2640, costs over $70. The cover was thick aluminum so I drilled and tapped 1/2" pipe thread and then mounted a hydraulic elbow to slow the oil a bit. So far its worked for several years. The Deere cover has a large O-ring fitting offset so the return oil doesn't hit the paper filter which may contribute to the filter lasting longer.

I think the parts book on a JD 158 loader is where I found the part number for the tee to hook into by the brake pedals.

I wonder if his has a 3-point... if NOT, there's nothing to "T" into "by the brake pedals".

Thank you for the help, Bob. I have looked up other forum questions pertaining to joystick installation, but sometimes don't understand the input.
Thanks, Alan

Alan, this is how the "old-time" dealers in my area did it, "back in the day", and it seems to work well.

Some "tee" into the line by the driver's right foot, which feeds the rockshaft, if so equipped, or into the bottom of the steering priority valve, which is plugged on NON three-point tractors.

All 3 methods source the oil from a common circuit, so there's NO difference in functionality betwen the methods.

I like the method of installing the "tee" in the valve under the hood, as it is easy to do, and keeps the high-pressure line more removed from the operator, "just in case".

The SIMPLEST way I've found to "source" oil for the loader valve on the pre-side console 4020's is to replace the "elbow" fitting at the top of the hydraulic valve (SCV) under the hood with a "tee", and run a hose from there to the (closed center) loader valve.

Deere has the "tees", I don't have the part # at hand. The last time I bought one, I took the old elbow in to the parts counter, and had them match it up with a "TEE".

The oil comming BACK from the loader valve needs to return to the oil cooler/front pump charge circuit. If you do NOT do this, you will quickly loose hydraulics any time the clutch pedal is depressed. (ASSUMING it's a synchro-range.)

Deere sells a replacement cover for the tranmission oil filter that has a port built in, for this purpose. Some have simple tapped a hole in their existing filter cover.
