When you hold the clutch in,the transmission pump stops pumping oil to the main hydraulic pump. You should stiil have enough reserve to operate the hitch though. If you lose the hitch almost immediately, you possibly have an internal hydraulic leak, bleeding off your pressure. It could be a bad remote,or rockshaft valve leaking internally,or a stuck relief valve in the trans.

depends on how long you're holding the clutch in. You see, there is a primary oil pump in the transmission which will stop if you hold the clutch in for too long. This causes the big pump up front to not take on any oil to move the 3 point. you may also notice the power steering stop. This is a pain in the arse when using a loader in tight quarters. (steering slows up)

This sounds like a crude design, but it worked well when new. I hope you have the appropriate amount of oil in the tranny, i used john deere hy gard in my 4020 when i had it.

If you have problems with the three point as SOON as you hit that clutch, then i suspect greater problems.

"You see, there is a primary oil pump in the transmission which will stop if you hold the clutch in for too long"

Heck, it's not a matter of "holding the clutch in too long"... the pump stops almost instantly when the clutch is depressed.

A "high pressure leak to sump", meaning hydraulic system pressurized oil leaks back to the sump, rather than being used by a "function", and being returned to the "cooler/charge circuit" for re-use by the front pump will quickly deplete the reserve of oil up front in the cooler and tank, ahead of the main pump.

The SCV'(s), the 3-point hitch operating valve, the steering valve, or even the brake valve can cause this, if defective. GENERALLY, the "leaking" component will be heat up before the other components, and potentially be "noisy".
