Painted my 1936 D recently. Removed radiator assembly and had radiator cleaned. Removed gas tank assembly. Had carb professionally redone.

Put everything back together and the only way I can start is with a tow. Once started it runs fine. Still cannot flywheel start. Tow again and it starts fine. Did not touch mag.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you,

Thanks for your comments.
Some answers - I do hear a loud snap when flywheel turns. Removed spark plug and did notice spark during turning process. Don't have enough knowledge if spark was sufficiently strong. To me, it looked like a faint blue spark. Could be the daylight shining in my shed though.
Did not paint mag or wires. Covered up mag and removed wires before process.

Any other thoughts please?

Hi Ken, You want a good hot bright blue spark at the plugs or off wires that should jump a good 1/8 to 1/4 inch if not more when mag impulse clicks. Try cleaning the points and resetting them as may have just oxided points while sitting. Check your timing again and make sure it's right and check valve settings. Like John T said the impulse may just be gunked up and need to spray some penetrator or oil inside to loosen it up and lube it some. Hope no one sandblasted without covering things up well? It isn't wet fouling plugs with gas is it? If so make sure choke it opening all the way or air cleaner is clean and flow not restricted. Was it running okay and starting okay before? Was anything else changed or done to engine? Check mag timing and valve timing again. Is it missing terrible or back firing? Plug wires on wrong. For a Wico the top terminal goes to #1 LH cylinder flywheel side or on other mags the forward terminal goes to #1. Carburetor settings rechecked? You should be able to find mag timing and valve timing instructions on here in past archives posts or in a JD DIR225 operations manual for your D but if not post back.

Does the Mag SNAP as youre turning the Flywheel??? If not theres no starting spark but she could still run fine when pull started cuz over 250 RPM that spring wind n trip assembly which makes em SNAP when cranking isnt used. Maybe its as simple as loosening the mag in its mount (if a flange instead of a base mount) a tad n see if she SNAPS then when turning the flywheel or else gum n dirt may have the impulse assembly gunked up so shes not winding the spring. If its a weak dull faint clink versus a loud distinct SNAP the spring may be weak.

Im NOT a D man and can only help if its like a Wico C base mount mag (unsure what mags those years of D's used) but if its a Dixie or Edison Splitdorf or etc youre gonna need a Glen in Tx or Duane to help you

In the meantime remove the plugs n see if shes making spark as the flywheel turns?? Glen or Duane or Frank or the other Gents will need to know that anyway

Did you paint the mag, wires, or plugs? Paint on any of these & it will bleed off enough to not start. Don't ask me how I know. BTDT
