Which John Deere sickle mower would work behind my '51A without a 3 point hitch?

Thanks

A couple of years ago I bought a 52A that had a #5 sickle mower from a man that does commercial mowing.

He liked the #5 mower because he could mow under trees, around ponds, and down in ditches.

I use it to mow around fence lines, tree lines, and cut hay. It will glide over rocks and under everything else. It does not do well with barbed wire or T posts.

It will break away if it hits a stationary object like a stump, tree, or wooden post.

It works so good that I bought another #5 mower to rebuild for my 43B as shown in the picture above.

I am planning to buy a couple more and build a third working mower for my 40B.

Replacement parts are still available and special used parts are somewhat available.

Hope this helps.

Number 5 mower, hands-down one of the best mowers I've been around. I have two of them. One is literally welded together in SEVERAL places, and the silly thing still works. If they have been cared for even a little bit, they will wear forever and cut like nobody's business. PLUS, they were made for the tractor and make quite a pair. IMHO

Way back in the olden days I also used the good ole reliable No. 5 (first tractor mower after the No 4 horse drawn) as the Frankster suggested and preferred the side mounts on the drawbar for a quick n easy mounting. You can still get parts for that mower and if it has a new set of wear plates n hold down clips, a new knife n all good sharp ledger plates and is registered and the lead set properly it will mow till the cows come home IF NOT it will drive ya to drink, been there doen that on a hot summer day grrrrr rrrr
