4020 Won't Start When Hot

I have a 4020 Diesel that starts well when the engine is cool, but will not restart after lunch break when the engine is still warm. It starts well if I let it sit for about 3 hours to cool down befor trying to restart. The electrical system has been completely overhauled and the starter spins the engine very fast when hot or cold. I think it is a fuel delivery problem. The injector pump has also been rebuilt. The engine runs smooth after starting and puts out 94 hp on dyno. It does not have any blow-by and does not smoke when running or during failed cranking attempts. Should I take the injector pump back to have it re-checked, or should I look elsewhere? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As already mentioned - that's a very common wear problem with Roosamaster/Stanadyne rotary injection pumps. Whoever "rebuilt" your pump should of tested it a low engine-cranking speed for hot output. It is just about always caused by a worn head & rotor assembly which is NOT routinely replaced during a rebuild. It's a very common problem with the US Army and all their diesels with Standayne pumps - expecially with Humvees. Standard temporary fix to start a hot engine is to pour water on the pump (when not running). If the pump was rebuilt - bring it back and have them do it right - unless it was some sort of "budget" job with no warranty. I used to work in a pump shop and have sent out many pumps with worn head & rotors - but only when the customer agreed to it and did not wish to spend the extra money to fix.
Often it is just a matter of the pump not turning fast enough to crack the injectors open - but only when hot. Once spinning a little faster - even when hot - works fine. If you don't want to spend the money to fix, try installing a $10 hydraulic pump destroker - it might make engine spin a little faster so the pump will work hot. Or, just use cold water on the pump.

The pump was rebuilt by an injector shop that has a good reputation for quality work. i have had great luck with them in the past. They did not mention anything about a worn head, etc., so i guess I will bring it back. I guess anyone can make mistakes, but here lately it seems like I can not count on any type of repair shop to do the job right the first time. Maybe it"s just my luck. I appreciate the info.

Our 4020 will vapor lock if it's really hot. The cure is to pour about a gallon of cool water over the pump and distributer and then it starts right away.

I always heard that's a good way to ruin your pump ?

Only if it's running, and hot, at the time!

The later 4020s with the electric fuel shut-off would do that on occasion. Basically when you attempted to start the engine, sometimes the electric signal did not get sent to the fuel shut-off and therefore the fuel did not get turned on. I would suspect the keyed ignition switch first, the wiring second, and then the fuel solenoid.

Sounds like a bad head and rotor in the pump. Swap it for a reman or spend some pretty good money to have the head and rotor replaced and the pump rebuilt. A good pump shop can certainly check it and verify. If it has a lot of hours on it and the pump has never been through then it is probably time.

My 2510 did that even after I had the pump rebuilt, took it back and they told me the pump head was weak, but thought it would be ok, after they replaced that it starts great now, hot or cold.
