HELLO, I just replaced a manifold, and head gasket on a 1951 G. After completing reassembly,I can't get the tractor to run on two cylinders. After checking for spark and valve clearences, it only will run on the left cylinder. The G ran fine before dissasembly. Please help.

throw some kind of old plug wire on to see if that helps. check to see if your getting fire to both plugs. don't open up the adjusting screws on the carb to much to start with and only adjust them real slowly when you do and don't open them up to much. if you do you'll foul a plug every time. i can't imagine a vaccum leak causeing an engine to miss, but i learn some thing new every day on these forums.

I had a similar problem with a JD B and I had to reset the float.

Even if the plugs look good, try replacing them.More problems have been related to bad plugs even though they look good.

Whenever you replace a manifold it is necessary to put a straight edge on the machined area to make sure it isn't warped. If you didn't do this, it may be where your problem lies.

DickD -- May I assume you are suggesting there may be a loss of vacuum leak? And that such a leak means the non-firing side doesn't draw any air-fuel mix? Yes, very plausible.

Now to 51G -- if you don't mind a bit of a mess, insert the little red straw into the nozzle of a WD-40 can, and shoot some around the base of the manifold to see if you have any change. I believe that if you have a vacuum leak, spraying of the WD-40 at the suspect joint will bring about fire on the failing cylinder side -- at least temporarily.

Back to the sparkplug suggestion -- plugs are quite tricky and prone to failure at the least opportune time for any of us. I had one fail me last week right slap in the middle of a First Engine Run-up test. I shut down to adjust oil pressure and when starting, the engine would not fire on the no. 1 side. I changed out the plug and bingo -- normal operations! Always be suspect when dealing with sparkplugs, regarless of brand. (PatB)
