Guys-

Have a question regarding pistons for my b. the stock pistons were not cast with a number inside the piston, but have a number stamped on the end of the piston B1997R .045 Oversized. I have replacement pistons that are cast inside at B2724R. The 1997 pistons are not in the best condition. My question is twofold - first, any additional information on the 1997 pistons (aluminum/cast, horsepower, gas/all-fuel, factory or rebuild). Secondly, since the 1997 pistons are not in the best shape, can i get rings to put in the 2724, or do i have to go with the 1997. Finally, the 2724 pistons have a recessed side to the piston. what is the purpose of that?

Thanks

So since it looks like i will be needing a set of .045 rings for my b 1997r, who or where do you recommend?

What about .045 over rings on a set of B1772R Pistons which i also have and are in excellent condition. Could I put oversized rings for a 1997 to a 1772.

According to my parts book, the B1997R pistons are .045 over allfuel pistons while the B2724R pistons are standard size gasoline pistons. Hope this helps

I don't have my parts book handy, this will give the answers for sure. You may need the B and 50 books to find them. But it sounds like you have a set of .045 oversized pistons as indicated by the stamping on the top head of the piston. and the others since they are marked only on the inside of the skirt are most likely standard size because I'm thinking the oversized ones aren't marked in there. So these won't interchange.

You need to get a measurement of your block ID and go from there. If it is now .045 over you can get aftermarket piston sets in .090 and .125 over as needed. These should be cheaper than boreing and sleeving your block back to use standard pistons. Which I would only do after the .125 limit was reached or if you had some kinda big time problem with a cylinder like deep rust pits, scoring,or cracks or chunk out of back edge.
