If, with the bottom cover off, you don't see any problems such as the release bearing frozen wearing the adjusting bolts off, on the pressure plate, or any linkage excessively worn, the problem may be just a free travel adjustment. To understand the adjustments you need to know how the clutch linkage works. Refer to Bob and Glens pictures. when the clutch pedal is pushed down, the external spring on the pedal, goes over center to help your leg hold the pedal down. The shaft in the pedal rotates the and is splined to a cam. The cam is not connected to the release bearing carrier. When the cam rotates, it pushes the followers on the release bearing carrier, and that pushes the fingers on the pressure plate. When you release the pedal, the pressure plate fingers push the carrier back to the cam. The cam rotates the shaft and pushes the pedal back, and trips the spring back over center and snapes the pedal up. If due to normal wear, the cam is not pushed back far enough, the spring will stay in the over center position, and hold the free play out of the linkage. The main free travel adjustment is in threaded sleeve and bearing carrier. There is also pedal height adjustment, and finger bolt adjustment. It would help to have a manual, and follow it in order.
