I recently purchased a 58 420w. The steering wheel is in poor shape. I would replace but someone apparently thought it would be a good idea to weld the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Does anyone know where I could find the u joint assembly for this tractor?

I repaired a steering joint on a 430 W is yours the same? It was loose in the joint and the shaft was worn that the steering wheel fit on to .The joint had pressed in pins that were weld in the middle of the cross. It took carbide to cut the weld to release the pins. The ends of the pins are knurled & then hardened. They were worn only .001. The joint had plastic bushings . The eye of the yokes were worn a few thousands so I hone them round & made oilite bushing & pressed in the yokes & fit to the pins .Pushed the pins back in & weld in the middle. The steering wheel shaft had two 1/2 in. bushing on each end the shaft wasn't worn in the middle so I made one long bushing and honed to fit the shaft. It turned out good .He was happy. I did it for a challenge. But I am not interested in doing another.LOL.I charged him $165 My friend told me later, the joint assembly was available from Deere for $430 Earl

The thing that is really frustrating is the ujoint isn't in too bad of shape. The tractor has power steering so there shouldn't be a lot of stress on the joint. I'll bet the key came out or something like that and instead of getting a new one they welded the dern thing to the shaft, a huge weld all the way around the nut and hub of steering wheel. So really, if I can take the ujoint apart, all I need is the shaft that goes from the wheel to the joint.

The shaft is part of the upper yoke. Just grind the weld off remove the steering wheel & fix the keyway or cut a new keyway on a new spot on the shaft Same with the steering wheel. Earl

58

I been thru that nut roll. I did a bunch of figuring using the dimentsions in the McMasterCarr catalog to try to find a substitute. First off that is not a standard U Joint and trying to substitute always came up with not enough room either length wise or in diameter to get one to fit in there.

If it were not for the welded on steering wheel, you would be in business. I know of two people who make/rebuild them. I got one that was remade after I sent the machinest the core that I had. Problem you will not have the piece that the steering wheel normally slips on and bolts to. If you go to johnnypopper board the last name of the man that made mine was Coy, you may get a hit by doing a search there.

Also, a while back I talked to Dave Cook 715-373-2092 he said that he had his shop figured a way to rebuild that little monster that you have. There again, you have the challenge of not having a complete core. Anyway, Dave might be able to conjure up something depending on how much you gotta hack off to the get the old weld off and your joint taken out. Dave specializwes in Dubuque stuff and his neighbor John Shepard does also

If you would be able to find a needle in a haystack and locate a used one it will be super expensive since those things are made out of unobtanium. Yep quite a feat of engineering - it only took one year for Mother deere to figure out that was a monstrosity. But I do like to sport my slanted wheel and the new U Joint that Mr Coy made for mine.

Good Luck

Here I go sticking my neck out again!I do not have a clue what it even looks like.Would a(automotive type impact u-joint with the black-oxide finish which is easy to work with as you can drill, grind, weld and so forth)If you want the best and the smoothest buy the APEX brand made in DAYTON,OHIO.APEX also makes the sealed ones for helicoptors which are mil-spec and costly.Go to GOOGLE and get more info on APEX U-joints.CENTAUR

I've seen them at tractor shows for around $150.They looked like new,but they might have been rebuilt.
