I went to look at a 2030 on Friday. It is a 1975 German made model. Looks real good from dash forward but only ok on the rear mainly because of the fenders. It has one new rear tire and the other has lots of traed but weathered. Problems with it. (1) power director out, (2) brakes out, and (3) lift is slow. I did not check the remote outlet. The pto and power steering works properly. I like the tractor but need your imput on value and expense to get the three problems fixed. The transmission seem good except for the power director (I think thats what it is called). It is on the column left side. The oil looks good but the hydraulic fluid is a little milky and is at the add level line.

i used some valvoline hydraulic oil in an ih 574 and ruined the clutch pack in it. i agree with the post about checking the type of oil used in it. i believe that you need to hire a jd mechanic to come look at the tractor before you buy it.

Just had a 1520 with milky oil in the shop .Equipped with a reverser & would not move at all. Drained the transmission in two places, changed the hydraulic filter and still had to remove the valving to get the milky oil from behind a valve before it would work. First of all, you need to determine which setup you have like John said.

If you can do the work yourself, and if you can buy it really cheap $$ it still may cost more in parts to fix then just going and buying one that allready works. If you have to hire the work done I'd say it's going to be better to just go buy a new one.

I don't know what you mean by a "Power Director."
The 2030 - along with the rest of that general series was available with many different options. Clutch-driven PTO, hydraulic PTO, hi-low hydraulic-aux. trans. hydraulic reversr aux. trans., etc. Also uses a small German hydraulic pump unlike many other U.S. built Deeres. They are good tractors. We did, however, have out share of hydraulic problems with them - much having to do with the array of metal hydraulic pipes that would break or come loose - that powered all the optional stuff. Deere has several updates to repair them. And, like any other tractor has uses the transmission for the hydraulic sump - if there is a metal parts failure, it can run through the entire powetrain and hydraulic system and really make an expensive mess.

I'm not sure power director is the correct name. It is a shift on the go feature like a TA on a farmall. I'm not really concerned about that feature but did not know if it affected the other problems. The tractor has a high and low range and cranks and runs good with no smoke. the owner has all the books with it. My main concern would be the need to split the tractor otherwise I could probably fix the problems.

There's no telling from here. But . . . in regard ot the hydraulic pipe faliures - some we fixed without splitting - by pulling the trans. top over off. But, others did require splitting. All depends what is wrong. If there is general wear throughout the hyd. system, and the trans. pump is bad, then spitting will be necessary. Steering gets priority oil - so if the hyd. system is only working at 1/2 capacity, it may still steer fine - without the other accessorires working properly. If the hi-low is bad - you have to fix it - you can't just run without it.

thanks for the info. The high/low shifter works fine it is the shifter on the column that doesn't work. The owner has been using the tractor without the "power director" as I think that's what he called it (but maybe he should not have been doing this). I know on the farmalls you can run those with the TA out but I don't know about the PD. He's also been using the tractor without the brakes. I think the slow lift problem has maybe just started. The owner has had the tractor since about 1980 and from talking to him he has chankged the fluids regularly and kept it maintained. He told me he could not keep the brakes fluid bled. Anyway, the answers help and seems like there is a possibility the tractor will need to be split.

That IS the hi-low - or reverser. The tractor has a dual-range transmission - that is the gear-driven hi-low-reverse ranges on the left had stick. But - it also comes with an optional - in addition - hydraulic hi-low (rabbit-turtle cartoons on it) or a reverser. That has a shifter on the steering column. It has to work or the tractor won't move. Maybe it stuck - but if it's transmitting power to the gear trans., part of it is working.

thanks jd, I wanted to be sure we were referring to the same thing. The owner told me it didn't work but I did not try it. Maybe it is stuck but the tractor transmission works fine. You've been a big help and thanks for your patience. Jerry

Does any oil spray from the brake cylinders when the pressure line running back to the brakes is loosened? Unless this tractor is free It maybe best to pass it by. An operator that keeps operating a tractor without brakes, high-low shift or hydraulic reverser and slow hydraulics. They are somebody that doesn't maintain a machine. Get some anti-freeze test strips and check the coolant. Odds are anti-corrosion additives have been depleted for years. You might be in for a set of sleeves as well. The low pressure trans pump circuit has to run at 150 psi output. Checking the trans oil filter and screen are next. If somebody has added a non wet clutch compatible oil. The high-low or reverser, independent pto and brakes are ruined. Have a look around the place and find the oil containers the owner has and has used in the past. If they don't say "wet clutch compatible", it isn't.
