I am new to JD vintage tractors so this is no doubt a really stupid question. What are the differences/sinilarities to an A and a AR? Also years of mfg and hp?

Sounds like you are covered on explanations but if you buy yourself one and need more info on what may or may not interchange you'll find that in Model A parts catalogs. One catalog covers all variations of the unstyled A, AR, & AO models and another catalog covers the styled versions of A, AR, & AO. There were separate operators manuals though for A row crop and standard tread AR & AO. The other rare bird is the early AOS covered in it's own separate parts catalog and operators manual too.

The AR was made from 1935-1952. The A was made from 1934-1952. The AR has a wide front end with a standard tread and also more sheet metal since it came with fenders. You could get fenders for the A but they didn"t wrap around as far as the AR. The seat sits further back and you"re lower to the ground. It"s pretty much a smaller version of the D. It was produced mainly for midwest crops whereas the A was for row crow farming. The A also came in different configurations such as tricycle gear with 2 wheels together, a single front wheel (AN), an adjustable front end with wide settings (AW). The engine is pretty much the same for the A and AR. Actually there are some parts you can swap between the 2 if you"re restoring one. These are the basic differences, but someone else can chime in and tell you more. There are also pictures under the photo gallery. Just type in A and AR and you"ll get back lots of photos.

Sorry, forgot to give HP ratings. The ratings were the same for the given year for both the AR and A. They also styled (streamlined) the AR and A. The A was styled in 1939 and the AR in 1949. There is a site called Link that will give you the stats on the A/AR when you get to this site, you should see stats on the left side of the webpage. Click on the model and it will give you more information. When the A came out in 1934, it was around 18.7hp drawbar and 24.7 pto/belt.

Thank you. We have mostly AR s in our area but A's are turning up at auction sales. From a distance I know what each looks like just the similarities I wasn't sure about. Sounds like the parallel of IH H and W4 or M and W6.
