On the top of the pto shield, there is a slit, looks like it it used to mount something to?

Kemper, this is where the old style safety shields that covered the power shaft fastened to. The shields fastened with a flat piece of steel that you would place at 90 degrees to the shaft and that would lock the shield from the shaft to the tractor shield. They were cumbersome and often were removed but they worked before plastic or metal enclosed shafts were available. Hope this helps. Mike
