hi--i ran my 4630 with bad manifold gaskets
last summer. we took the head off for to take it in. the cylinders dont look good, the tractor ran rough. i would like to know visual signs or indications that i need an overhaul. i should have had a compression test before and probably need to have the injectors checked. any input or
advice would be appreciated. thanks

It's going to be hard to say with the cylinder head off. You're correct - most engine diagnosis is done with the engine in operating condition - check blowby, compression test, etc. Cylinder wear isn't always a big factor - a cylinder can have quite a bit of wear and still provide satisfactory compression and have low oil consumption. You mention that the cylinders "don't look good", and if that's the case, you're probably better off to go ahead and overhaul it now, rather than waste the parts and labor to reinstall the head and find that it still doesn't perform properly. Yes, the nozzles should definitely be tested, and more than likely if they have any hours on them at all, they're going to be low on opening pressure at least. They might also have bad spray patterns or tip leakage. And don't forget the other half of the fuel system - the pump. If it has very high hours or hasn't been treated to quality fuel and filters and frequent filter replacements, expect it to need gone through. The pump HAS to be in good shape internally to provide good starting and proper performance. I've seen a couple of situations where bad nozzles were replaced with new units and the engine actually LOST horsepower, because having the nozzles up to specs forced more fuel back past worn plungers and barrels and the fuel delivery dropped.

Color of the tops of the sleeves- blue is bad.
Get your injectors tested a bad spray pattern causes heat and abnormal wear. The ridge on the top of the sleeves like already stated- make sure your not just looking at the carbon ridge. and the rest that was already stated- how much blow by it has coming out the tube while running. IF you have to OH her look at these guys- their kits will help her start and run better due to their piston design-

Ya dont happen to live in texas? Starting to look for our old 4630- 1988 it got sold and went down there- 75' model quad with 20.8x38's with gray band duals had 3200 hours or so and a fresh paint job- NOW to just find the serial #!!!!!

How many hours?

How much "ridge" in the cylinders?

How much oil was it using?

Any visible cracks in the piston tops?
