Can you still get muratic acid locally? I know that the EPA was coming down on using acid for marine use several years ago. I used to use muratic to boil out keel coolers on a steel shrimp boat, and it got to be difficult to find.

The part of the tank that doesn't have varish is probably rusty. If it is, get a gallon of Muriatic acid at a hardware store and mix it 50/50 with water in a bucket. Put a pipe plug in the outlet and pour in the 50/50 mix. Put the gas cap on and slosh the mix around for a few minutes. Drain the tank and flush well with water for several minutes. Take out the pipe plug and shove a shop vac hose in the filler neck so that it's blowing air into the tank and water/air out the outlet on the bottom of the tank until the tank is dry. Leave the tank out in the sun to make sure all moisture is evaporated. Inspect the inside with a small mirror and it should be bright medal. If not, repeat the procedure. As soon as the tank is clean and dry, coat the inside with Kreem or a similar product. I did this with my B tank 3 years ago and have had no problems since then.

Try Marine Clean from POR 15. I had one like that and it worked wonders. Or u can go to your local grocery store and get a bottle of Greased Lightning that works pretty good also.

Try "Gumout" brand carb and choke cleaner. Unless they changed their formula, it used to work very well to dissolve that gooey old varnish.
