I left a towel in the transmission ! Apparently , i dont remember leaving any in there but i had placed them into the brake holes for cleaning debris off tractor and keeping it out of tranny .One of the dumbest things ive ever done . Only took the tractor out twice for a ride , maybe a total of three miles . Had it in the garage and notice the cover on left side is leaking around seal and thought i better take it off and fix it , so i take cover off the and fluid looks like liquid paper pulp . and i see a piece wound around the visible gear .Not good my only thought . Took steering pedestal off got chunk out of gear And started flushing with kerosene , 40 or 50 flushes later it filters clear . It was a cotton cloth and it did break down when running ,i wouldnt have been so lucky with a polyester. Tires turn fine dont hear anything ,dont see anything in transmission ,checked visible bearings . Put new fluid in it runs fine . So i think they made John Deere's tough enough to handle even my stupidity lol! S.n. 223002 48 b has had its tranny cleaned with a towel literaly.

I was called out on a service call about 25 years ago on a Deere 690-A excavator..Seems the operator was swinging around on a demo job and stuck a rebar thru the oil pan..They pulled the oil pan after seeing oil on the tracks..Well , the companies mechanic that pulled the oil pan tied a rag on the oil pick-up screen because it was dripping on him.. Yep , you're right , he left it on the pick-up screen and bolted the pan back on..It ran for about 5 minutes then started to make noises..I then had to pull the engine and take it back to the dealer where I worked to repair it..A crank , a couple of rods , and they were back in business.. Sh*t does happen...

I wouldn"t think this would hurt anything...there is some clearance on parts and rag would dissolve...however I"m baffled as to the connection between the transmission and steering????

At least you got by on that one with no real damage. Had some certified JD wanna be dealer mechanics leave red rags in trans of 2510 once. Cut off oil supply to hydraulics ruining pumps and then dealer went bankrupt and JD said too bad have to fix ourselves again! GRRRRR RR !!! Had to have 2 new pumps and trans taken apart to get all the mess out to be done right.

That's no so bad. Some yahoo left a screwdriver in the rear-end of my grandpa's Farmall M at some point in time. The tractor hardly gets used anymore, but when it was used more often, every once in a great while everything would come to a screeching halt and sure enough, there'd be a chunk of screwdriver wedged in the gears somewhere.

naw, fun is when your hands lost the diesel tank filler cap and used a paper towel to cover the hole, for a while.

see what happens when you forget to take the papertowel out of the intake on the initial start up..... it could have been worse.

I found two pieces of masking tape in my engine after initial startup. One made it past the carb butterflys and onto a valve and the other was on the carb butterfly.

I found out that these tractors prefer gas to tape.
