Are you sure the G hasn't been updated to the later style rods with insert style bearings? The part # on these rods is F1074R. These rods use no shims. If your G is serial# 63924 or later, it came from the factory with these rods. I have seen a few earlier G's converted to these rods. If indeed you're down to no shims on the babbited rods, your rods and/or crank has a lot wear.

Well I just replaced the rod bearings on my "D" and was told that unless you had the crank turned the journals are probably out of round. This is ok it will run a long time like that but makes it impossible to measure clearance. Reason there were none on it is someone removed them as bearings wore which is proper thing to do. you need to reassemble with two shims as book says then turn over by hand. Then remove one shim and see if you can still turn over by hand. Do this after you nave torqued to proper specs. Continue removing shims untill you can no longer turn over by hand than add one shim back. Leave one side loose while working on other.
