I have a JD B w/ a cylinder head casting # B2871R and I have another head B1784R. The 2871 was the stock one. will these interchange, or do I need to hunt for a new 2871? If so, any good leadsd on a 2871. May could make a trade for the 1784. Thanks

I don't have my parts books handy to verify those casting numbers ,but the heads from B's 1941 up to the end 1952 ? are will interchange. The only thing you need to watch out for is the washer for the oil feed to the rockers that goes on the center stud. One style of head takes a different shaped one than the other 2 so it feeds the oil properly and doesn't block the drain back holes.

I have both on the bench. and so far, there are 2 extra holes and a different shaped oil washer on the 1784 than on the 2871. just don't want to have to buy a new head since i already have a good one, if it will work properly.

You just NEED to make sure you are using the correct washer. I think the wrong one will leak some of the oil pressure off as that port doesn't totally align right and I think it may also cover up some of the return hole/holes ? If you have both styles and both heads have a different pattern where that washer sets you should be able to see which one is right for which head. Chances are real good if you have the one for the head you are using it was the right one,but I have seen them mixed up before. I just thought I'd give you a heads up as to the only problem I know of with swapping them.
