I had 2 neighbors that had an 8 row wide front mount on a 4630 That cultivated corn the second time with hillers In c 2 About 6 mph . That was a disk in place of 2 shovels to throw dirt on each side of the row. They had 8 1/4s of terraced land and not paraell so they had lots of pointed rows and short rows . They were in his 70s when they quit They loved the front mount .

Allan you lost? lol. Was it a green cultivator painted red? I have no clue and those old pushers went out here in late 50s everything after was 3 point. Maybe those binders couldn't lift these combination new style rigs everyone wants to run now?

Wait a min..back in about 74 I put a front mount 12 row 30 in spacing cult. on a 4620 JD and other than the color it looked alot like your picture-- think we sold a 8 row wide also but cultivators vanished soon after that

We swapped the John Deeres in about '53 to the rear mounts and the IHs (I think) around 55 or 56. (Whenever the two-point hitches came out).

Course back then, they were 6-row narrows (22 inch) and the four row wide, but anything to get away from those slow front mount cultivators.

Like a breath of fresh air, 'cause ya didn't have to "drive 'em" anymore. The John Deere's tool bar model was better because it had that Stabilizer blade that kept 'er going straight, even when using conventional tools.

More like running a rotary hoe than a cultivator. :>)

Maybe that's the reason they went out of business.

Oh, but they are not out of business it was a buy out/ merger which has gone on in all types of business for years and years. When Tenneco took control of IH they all but dropped the Case Line almost every thing that remained was IH including new tractor designs. They are still making and selling IH equipment. They still make new parts for old IH equipment. As far as I know they still sell axial flow combines. IH itself was a company made up of dozens of other companies that fell into buy out/merger category.

Point being,

Anyone who has ever ran the two-row or four-row version of that cultivator knows that they weren't all that hot either.

That has to be the absolute "dingest" design ever. Can you imagine pushin' that goofy thing all day long at 2mph?

Wonder how many of those were sold? One? Two?

If you ever run a 3 point cultivator for a few days you will never LOOK BACK at a front mount.

At least 20-TIMES easier. Maybe more. Takes just about 2 minutes to learn too.

No more of that "cultivator blight" either. :>)

I think you just touched on the reason these things were originally invented.

People must actually think ya look behind on a rear-mount cultivator. Ya don't, you look forward and ya do it at a good 7 to 8 mph on a decent cultivator.

Ya drive aiming that front axle over the row and the laterial stabilizer discs lock the implement where it belongs. Works really slick and there is absolutely no reason to look back; unless of course, ya wanna see if the old dog is keepin' up. :>)

Herbicides and rolling cultivators sent those things to the junk yard.

Must be he's lookin' at one of the old patio color lawn tractors! Dad had one he bought new. He said the only way you'll ever get a GOOD red and white tractor, is take a green one and paint it!

Oh Heck,

You'll get no argument from me; John Deere builds excellent equipment.

Problem is, it just is not worth the 4-times inflated price that they seem to think it is.

I have to agree with your point also. A few weeks ago I looked at a 64' Deere 2010 gas tractor, nothing fancy, tires not good, seat and steering wheel bad, no paint to speak of, 1 remote, no battery etc and it looked like it had not seen the inside of any building since new. Could have gotten this for a measily 4,000. I thought I was generous at 2,000. I'm kicking around a decision on an IH 460 that's real nice. I'm hard core Deere, but not stupid either (at least I think). I want something heavy enough to put a forklift mast on the 3 point for handling steel sheets.
