How fast does a 1971 3020 go in 8th gear with a syncro-range? I have one and with the shift lever all the way back and running at 2000 rpms it goes about 12 mph. I drive it to the gas station down the road to my field sometimes and it's about 2 miles. My ops manual says about 17 mph. Is something wrong? It is a diesel also.

We have a 3020 powershift that goes a little over 20mph at pto rpm. We have also had a 3010 with syncro range and both tractors had almost identical speeds in 8th gear. That was with 15 5 38 tires as well.

Did you have the speed drum set for 7th or 8th gear? At 7th it would show 12 mph for 2000+ RPM.

No I didn't, does that affect any thing other than tell you how fast you are going?

It has no effect except on the driver. If its set for 7th gear, you won't see a speed indicated over 12 mph, even though its doing 22.

Yeah I tried the overide and the engine was screaming but it did not go much faster. I have 15.5-38 tires and no load.

Have you adjusted the clutch?

No I have not, is that something you can explain here or is it too complicated?

With the engine running 1900 rpm there is supposed to be 1 to 1.5" of pedal free play. Its adjusted by tilting out the battery and loosening the big nut on the clutch shaft and the small bolt through the curved slot. You have to take out a cotter key to loosen the big nut.

If there is no free play, the clutch is slipping and its not been improved or had its life lengthened any by that slippage. If the clutch is slipping it will slip worse going up hill or with a load on the hitch behind.

There is a throttle override which allows you to operate the tractor at 2500rpm. That is where your 17-18mph road speed is!. The "rated" speed of 2000 rpm is the engine spee where your pto is turning at the designed 540 or 1000 rpm. You arn't operating the pto while driving at road speed are you?

I get 22 mph on my 4020 at 2500 rpm unless there too big a load behind it. With 30,000 pounds of wagons and corn I could only get 16 mph, but then the engine speed was only 1600. I only did that once and I won't do that again.

The hand throttle should go up to 2250 (have to pull out on the knob) and the foot throttle to 2500.

That 17mph figure MAY be at a higher speed than 2000 rpm see what the max. rpm is to be set at for the foot throttle or hand throttle with the knob pulled out and I'm betting it's higher.
