I just bought a 720 that will turn over one time and then the starter bendix sticks, or I guess that is what happens. Do I need to buy a new starter, or should I be able to find someone locally that can fix the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can offer.
Alan

sounds more like a weak battery to me. put some other battery in it and try it out before you go buying new parts. could be the timing is off too. some of the other gys can tell you how to check that john t or f-i-t.

The reason I think it is the bendix sticking is that first, it sounds like it, and second, if I engage the clutch a bit, the belt pulley will turn over for one revolution as the engine turns and then quit. I have to quit cranking and then try again repeatedly. Each time it cranks one revolution and then gives that whirring sound and the belt pulley quits turning. Believe it or not, that sucker usually starts on about the fifth or sixth try, even at 20 degrees. Pretty impressive, I think. I hope my description makes sense.

Are you sure it isn't the other way 'round? You seem to describe that the starter drive gear engages with the flywheel and turns the engine a little (maybe one turn) but then stops even though the starter is still runing.

I believe you'll find it has an over running clutch drive on the starter that is slipping. You start to crank the engine and it rolls but soon stops. The starter is still running but is not at a high speed runaway. It is a rather quiet whirr but the engine is not rolling. You let up on the starter and it stops almost instantly rather than slowly coasting to a stop then you hit it again. The engine rolls but soon stops but again the starter motor keeps running but rather quietly.

If I understand you correctly, you need to replace the starter drive gear over running clutch assembly. It is not serviceable. Replacing the unit is not a tough job, if you don't mind disassembling the starter. It's a lot cheaper than a starter! Check out the brushes & replace if needed, clean it, lube it & it'll be good for another 15 or 20 years depending on use.

Al:
I think you have it. It sure sounds like it. Thank you very much. I'll have at it.
