I have a question regarding my 630. The only peice of PTO operated equipment I have is a snoblower and it worked fine until a couple days ago when I sheared the bolts off in the blowers PTO shaft. I replaced those, after a breif use, the PTO in the tractor chatters really bad, but only when the blower is on the ground. When it is raised, it runns pretty smooth, with only occasional chatter. Anybody have any ideas on whether this a blower problem of a tractor problem?

A needle bearing maybe wounded and on it's way to failing. A pto shaft under high torque does not like to slide. I busted a bunch of parts on my 435's pto by raising the blower while the engine was working hard.

Did the pto shaft get a dent in it and now will not slide together or apart freely therefor putting thrust on the tractor shaft?

No dent, the shaft slids freely.

Could be an internal problem in the PTO unit such as a bad bearing or something that's only showing up when the blower is down because the angle of the driveline puts more force against the damaged part. If the noise showed up in conjunction with a big shock load to the PTO, something probably took it in the shorts. Those PTO parts were subjected to quite a bit of strain before the shear bolts went south. If that blower is designed for a bigger tractor than a 630, then the bolts may have failed to late to save 50-year-old parts in the PTO system. But I'd definitely go over the snowblower with a fine-tooth comb checking every bearing and so forth for damage before tearing into the tractor. And be forewarned that some of those PTO clutch parts aren't too cheap. But I also wouldn't nickel and dime the job if you use and depend on the PTO to get you out and about after a blizzard. Fixing it right will make sure it's good for a long time.

Your response is not what I wanted to hear, but what I suspect myself. The blower is a 7ft Erskine, V type. It is not oversized for the tractor. The bolts sheared when I hit a pile of snow I pushed up before. The noise it makes now is very similar to the noise my Dad's 620 used make when we turned sharp corners with the 14T baler behind it. Just a hellacious crunch/grind/chatter that makes you want to shut the PTO off instantly. Anyway, thanks for your response.

I should also specify that the chatter is more internal on the tractor, with the blower making some extra noise, too. What confuses me is that it is only when the blower in down.

Is your PTO shaft too long so it can't collapse enough when you lower it?

No, the shaft isn't too long. I fixed that problem last year.

Have you checked the PTO shaft u-joints in the drive line?

I looked at that, everything seemed pretty tight, no excess play and I greased them all just to make sure. My dad suggested that the shaft might be bent, but it looks okay when it is running.

I just took to the shaft all apart and it does appear that there is a slight twist to the male end of the shaft and it loosens up the further it is extended. That would coincide with it rattling and banging more when it is lowered. What do you guys think? I appreciate everybody's input so far.

Got another shaft off something else that may fit to try ? Or hook the tractor onto something else and check it too.
