My JD 401b industrial tractor manual is telling me to use 30 wt oil only, not multi-viscosity above 32 F. I am sure there is a reason they want straight wt oil. Does anyone have a different opinion? I use 15-40 in my MF with no problems. Thanks stan

When we sold them new, Deere recommended straight 10W diesel-rated oil for cold weather use and straight 30W for warm. We used Quaker State HDX10W or Deere Torqgrard 10W. When the 15W-40 diesel rated oils first came into common use, Deere didn't want us using them in older engines (around pre-1985) - mainly because of all the polymers used in multi-visc. oils. Polymers burn off an leave residue in diesels that can cause stuck rings, carbon, etc. Polyacrylate, nitrile, silicone, etc. are examples of some of the polymers used. Some diesels today will still get a voided warranty if 15W-40 conventional oil is used at temps above zero F. (mostly Detroit 2-strokes). The polymer problem is eliminated by using sythetic oil. I suspect thats why Deere advocates its Plus 50 0W-40 Synthetic oil for cold weather. I do know the Deere still recommends - that if using conventional oil (not synthetic), - in the winter use oil that is rated for the coldest temps possible. And, if summer - pick an oil rated for the warmest temps possible. No conventional 15W-40 covers that entire range.

The only thing that I'm going to say about multigrades is , There's a wide fluxuation in oil pressure from idle to wide open throttle..We use 15w40 in Mack trucks and the oil pressure reads anywhere from 30 to 70 lbs..

I use 15 40 in my 401b...have used it about 6 years, in fact use it in all the tractors here (7)..it is diesel rated oil..I change oil and filter every 100 hours...the 401b is compared to the 2440..the last year built is 1981...

cannonball, What do you you use your 401b for? I am going to use mine for flail mowing, as it takes more hp to run a larger mower. Thanks for the info on the oil. Stan

Yes mine has the what I call instant reverse. I haven't got it running yet. I bought it with a bad motor. I have the reversing feature on my massy 203 industrial I like it, it is great for mowing, in corners. my massy 231 dosen't have it, also wish it did. Stan

I don't think you'll have the slightest problem with any quality 15W-40 diesel engine oil. I'm not sure how old that machine is, but if it is an older model, it wouldn't be surprising to see straight-weight oils recommended. Mult-Viscosity engine oils haven't been around forever they way straight-weight oils have, and your machine may simple predate the time when quality multi-viscosity diesel oil was available.

G-Man. Thanks for the reply, The machine is early 80's. They do recomend multi wt oil below 32 F. I think I will go with the 15-40. Stan

I would almost guess that the reason that Deere didn"t list multi-viscosity oil in that vintage machine is because they didn"t offer it then! I have service bulletins from the 60"s (before Deere offered their own bran oil) and they had no problem with them then. Mike
