hi i would like to know what everyone thinks of a deere 4450. i am interested in one with 5700 hours,2 wheel drive, and c/h/a. it has the quad range tranny. i know of one that has almost 9000 hours and still going strong, but would like more info. does it rate as one of deere's best? is the 466 as good or better then a 40 series 466? Any comments on how reliable, how fuel efficient, etc would be great. thanks.

One of my books stated that the 4430, 4440, 4450, and 4455 had the highest sales of any JD model in their respective eras. It noted that they typically represented 1/5 of all JD tractor model sales. I believe these units are the largest JD models made with 540 RPM PTO (and 1000) making them popular for haymaking and other lighter PTO work in addition the tasks in their HP range. Please post back if you know of larger models that came stock with 540 PTO as this information was not from an official source.

All this good feed back about the 4450 + 55 about makes me want to go out and get one !

But then what would I do with it ? I only have 3 acres. How fast are they on the road ? maybe I could park the truck and drive it to work. I'd save on plates and insurance.

I bought a new 4450 MFWD PS new in 1984, ran it until 1997 when I traded it for an 8200 which I still have. The 4450 was a good tractor. One thing that really impressed me was the MFWD. In moldboard plowing there was a big differance between it & the 4440. When you set that front wheel of the 4450 in the furrow, it stayed there. With 16 weights on the front of it the front end never lifted even in the toughest plowing. The only thing I didn't like about the tractor is it tended to run on the hot side, on a warm spring day the heat gauge was always on the edge of the red zone. At first Deere told us if the alarm isn't sounding don't worry about it. Then several years later there was a fan lockup kit available for it. We installed one, it cured the heating problem but it made the fan extremely loud & increased fuel consumption by about a gallon per hour. I know of other 4450's that had the same problem. The 4450 was one of the largest small frame tractors Deere built & I think the radiator was a little small for the 160 HP some of these had from new.

You see a lot of 50-series tractors with the viscous fan clutch locked out - cheaper than a new fan clutch, but as you say they will definitely be louder all the time and use more fuel. It can pretty easily take 10-15 horsepower just to drive the fan on a good-sized tractor. Fortunately the fan clutches have gotten better, although they will still occasionally fail even on the newer tractors. I've put them in 50s, 55s, 60s, 7000s, 8000s, 8010s and 8020s. Pretty harsh environment they're expect to survive in.

we have had 4430's,4440's,4450's,and 4455's (still have one 4450 and one 4455)..their all good tractors, but i'd definitely say that the 4450 is one of the best. The one we have will outpull our 5020! The 5020 isn't wore out either. i love the quad or powershift tranny's. i seen a 4450 with almost 19,000 hours down in texas, still ran good. it will make you a wonderful machine for many years.

we bought one new in '86..still have it today..great tractor! it has 9400 hours now and has worked hard it's whole life. back when it was new we pulled a 8-16 in B-2 with it,loads of power. Dynoed 168 then, probably still does. One of the best.

A 4450 is a extremely reliable tractor with my experience. I had a 4450 MFWD with Power shift transmission. We had an underhaul done on it at approximatley 5000 hours. When I traded it off last year for an 8200 I had about 6400 hours on it with no other work done to it, except an air conditioning recharge. In regards to fuel I also have one of those red tractors of about the same size that actually was better on the fuel than the 4450. However that red tractor was in the shop a few times

It's a tough one to beat for what they still bring today and much better fuel consumption than earlier models or bigger hp models that are bringing less. You can put duals and some inside weights on one and they will lug right along side some of the bigger ones in a gear slower maybe. Always did just a tad less work with one than a 6030 in a day side by side but on much less fuel too. We had a 85 model and for all around heavier tillage work and on the silage cutter was one of my favorites and just a much better cab and seat than earlier ones. Only problems we ever had in 6000 hours were some of sensors going bad but that happens on all of them with those type warning systems after a while. Also rebuilt the water pump once and did regular maintainance and no other problems and very reliable and much better cold starting too.

They're as reliable as anything Deere has ever built, as long as they're properly operated and maitained. Deere's Waterloo works has produced VERY few lemons over the years. A couple models that were more problematic than others or had some ongoing issues, but for the most part the quality of their products has remained high and consisten. A 4440 is very hard to beat - maybe the best general purpose tractor overall Deere has ever produced, but I'd rather spend time in a 4450 any day. Nicer, quieter cab with improved instrumention (digital tachometer with the Investigator II package), better HVAC system, a better seat, and the list goes on. Whether the 50-series 466 is "better" or not is a matter of opinion. It's certainly better than the early 40-series engine with the cam-driven oil pump that could experience pump drive gear failure if the engine had lots of hours and a lot of low-temp cold starts with high loads on the gear thanks to cold, thick oil. The 50-series engines have the gear-drive water pump. Some guys hate them, but I've seen them last just as long as a belt-driven pump on a 40-series and longer. Yes, if the weephole is plugged, they CAN put coolant into the engine oil and cause crank and bearing damage, but it's rare. If you're watching your fluid levels regularly, you should catch it before it happens, or at the very least before major damage can occur. If I owned one, I'd simply rebuild the pump every 1500-2000 hours or so - doesn't cost much to do and the coolant should be drained and changed that often anyway. The 50s also have a better hyraulic system, mainly due to the SCVs - Pioneer couplers, release levers, fulling closing dust covers instead of rubber plugs, etc. I wouldn't be afraid of any 50-series tractor in good condition that's been taken care of. But then again I would say the same of a 40-series. As I said, Deere didn't send many lemons out of Waterloo.
