Hey guys, I have the opportunity to buy a very good condition all original John Deere grain binder that is ground driven on rubber tires. It has always been shedded and used very little. I was wondering where the serial tags are on these binders. I would like ot identify the model but can't find any tag on the frame or around the seat. Its a six foot cut, has the sheave carrier and the breakaway system so if a rock or solid object is hit the whole binder table swings away from the tongue. The price is reasonable and i would appreciate any info about this piece of equipment you can give me, thanks to all for now and I look forward to input

Allan,
Parts Catalog PC-W8-(11-52) notes that the Light Running Grain Binder was built from 1923-1952 in 6, 8, and 10 ft sizes, and was available with pneumatic grain wheel with a cast-iron center and separate rim from 1936-1950 (from both the US and Welland-Canada works), and from 1950-52 a one-piece wheel was available from the Welland works.

A similar situation carried for the Main Wheel (bull wheel) - a 2-pc pneumatic wheel/tire was available from both US and Canada from 1938-1947, and from 1947-52 single wheel/rim was used, apparently from the Welland works. Not sure what the US Harvester works used during that time, but as I recall binder manufacturing moved to Welland sometime in the late 40's-early 50's. So this may help pin down your manufacturing date. A little more research may provide the tire sizes.

Jerry, My friend has a MH binder with rubber tires. His dad purchased it new in 1948. It is a horse drawn binder but was never used that way. The bull wheel had a very small tractor type tire on it with the lugs pointing backwards so that it wouldnt slip as easy. This binder only cut about twenty acers of oats each year for about five years and then the balers took over.---- Harold

Harold , Sounds like the case thresher my grand father bought new in 1949, threshed a little oats with it and put it in the machine shed and never took it out again. He had a J D cornpicker He bought in 51 and it picked 80 bushels of corn in 1968 and was put back in the shed also.

My neighbors had a new binder that had never been assembled. There Dad bought it at a local J D dealer that closed in the early 60s. They had a auction a few years ago and I think the guy that bought the place from them bought it.

I don't know when they were built, but those rubber mounted transport wheels look great on a GP.

Allan, You may be talking about a later model binder but I don't have any pocket ledgers showing any with rubber tires. Early ones would have had steel wheels. A 1931-1933 JD pocket ledger shows the light running JD grain binder as a horse drawn unit with 6, 7, & 8 ft. cuts. The JD tractor binder is shown in 10 ft. & 8 ft. cut sizes and claims the 10 ft. tractor binder could cut twice as much per day as a 8 ft. horse drawn binder. Doesn't give any model numbers for them. You may see "light running" or "tractor binder" stenciled across the back side. Maybe someone else has pocket ledgers showing some on tires?

You know Glenn -- those tires may be cut-offs. I can remember the local township pols expressing deep dissatisfaction with farmers taking to the newly oiled road surfaces during the 40's with steel wheeled implements. I would be quite interested in seeing what kind of tire is on the Bull Wheel. (PatB)

Yeah it's probably been changed over as did more looking and didn't find anything in old ad books about a 6 ft. tractor binder. Later tractor binders were PTO driven also instead or ground drive.

Allen -- Data point # 1 for you -- the catalog of Deere pubs which I have describes a "Light Running Grain Binder (6, 7 or 8 feet)" and for this binder, we have an Operator's Manual (OMW16150) and a Parts Catalog (PCW8) both still available from Deere Pubs at $33 each. No model number, only a description -- defining this binder separately from a light binder, or the tractor grain binder (8 and 10 feet). The toll free number for JD Pubs is (800) 522-7448 if and when you decide to fetch the publications. 'Nice find! Enjoy. (PatB)

Hey, ya the drive wheel is on a solid rim not at all set up like the cut off rims that I have frequently seen on hay rakes and plows. It looks to be the original rubber becuase the driving wheel has an old style Firestone closed tread type implement wheel. I guess this was designed for better traction. There is some surface rust but I will see if I can see any stencils aside from "John Deere" or "Made in Canada". Thanks so far guys you've been a godsend

Allen -- if you end up with this binder and want to restore it, restoration of those import/export decals is really neat. Take close up picutres, make sketches take measurements, all that stuff. Then get with Travis Jorde and he will come up with decals to fit the bill! In a way, they are as significant as the regular decals.
