Hi guys,
I've had a hard time finding the shaft bushing (brass bushing) for the Delco Remy distributor on my 1949 John Deere A. Where can I purchase one? or do any of you have any new or NOS bushings? The bushing goes the the distributor housing. Please let me know because I really need one. Thanks.

The last ones I did ( I can't remember which model ) I used a bushing from another model it was just longer so I cut it off. The ID and OD were the same. I used to keep them on hand for the A,B type and then the 520,530 type and the one for the M,MT So if you can't get one try another # it may work out for you.

Did you check your local starter - generator rebuilding place? Years ago they had them here. I don't know if they still do.

Gent's,

I live SW Texas. There are a number of JD dealers around here. If anyone needs the part in question, let me know and i will check around for you...if i find some, i will post the JD branch/location and you guys can procure it.

Let me know what i can do to help a fellow-deere restorationist?

regards,
tstex

I called my local JD dealer... he found two bushings in Canada (?). He said that other dealers may have them, but mother Deere doesn't have any more... and that once the two I get are got, the part will become obsolete.

THAT concerned me, so I ordered the two he found. One for me, one for you if you can't find one elsewhere. My e-mail is [email protected].

There was as reason some inventory is still left up here. We don't wear out as many bushings as the tractors are parked six months of the year and dog sleds are used instead.

Well, that and the fact that as soon as all of that wheel-tossed snow forms fenderbergs under those huge gaping elephant ear-shaped, block-out-the-sun-big fenders on those "Standards"....they can't move until they thaw out in April, right?

Hah!

So Buick, is it true you have two seasons up there.....Winter and July? Your new place keeping you warm? Any power outage issues? We're just getting ready to rev up for another hurricane season in a few months.

Stay warm, man!

Dave:

Be a pal and measure those NOS bushings real careful and make a sketch, as it could be a real help if anyone needs to turn a new bushing out on their lathe. From the ones I have replaced over the years, I would say some oil-lite material would be a good choice. one out of oil-lite might not last as long as the original, perhaps only 35 years maybe, but it would have better lubricity and not risk scarring the original shaft.

Hang on to those dimensions! I'll probably need them one day! Once you know the dimensions, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find a reasonable replacement at a place like McMaster.com.

Frank,
FWIW, the dimensions are on JDParts - for the subbed number. Measuring the length of a NOS 1917207, I get 1.981", OD 0.659", ID 0.494". These are close to the JDParts dimensions - but just a big larger. They aren't nice metric numbers either. I suppose the JDP dimensions are "installed" dimensions - or do I need a new battery in my digital caliper.

At $25 a crack for those longer bushings I have another argument for upgrading my lathe :)

Thanks Duane. Any thoughts on the material? The ones I installed many years ago, if I remember right, were copper flashed steel. I was thinking that if you used oil-lite sintered bronze it would be less likely to ever scar the steel shaft. Is your NOS one magnetic?

Frank,
No, mine appears to be standard bronze-bushing type material - like Oilite. The replacement bushing material is listed as DUREX on JDParts. I've replaced a number of them, and I don't recall any being magnetic - but I admit I didn't wonder enough at the time to check with a magnet.

Dave has steered you well -- and if you strike out with your dealer for some reason, make contact with Classic Generator (817) 473-1448, or visit their site listed below. They are the Delco-Remy bunch many turn to. (PatB)

The part number in the parts catalog is 1917207. I punched it in to JDParts.com, and it came up with part number 1909003 as a replacement. Can I assume that if JDParts.com crosses it, maybe JD has it? If not, try NAPA?

I'll be watching other replies to your question, as I also have a '49A... and would like a new bushing myself!
