Please forgive my ignorance! Can anyone tell me the major differences between a 1948 A and B? Is it mechanical or design/body style?

Thanks!

One quick way to tell all styled A's and B's apart from a distance is to count the bars on the grill. The B's have 7 and the A's have 8.

If you cannot see the openings on the grill then you can see the tail. The rear light on the B is centered on the smaller single six volt battery box. The A is offset to the right on a larger double six volt battery box.

Like FIT I always look at the pully size. It is also a quick way to pick off a large looking H because the pully is narrow and on the cam shaft instead of the crank. Gs and As have the same pully but the G is obvioulsy different in other ways.

The way I count them, it's 6 bars for the B and 7 for the A. The open ones you can count from a distance.

Or, on a '48, look for the "B" or the "A" decal on the forward portion of the hood.

LOL.

Sorry, just had to. Or the tiny "B" pulley versus the 12" "A" one, or the tapered muffler on a "B" vs. the straight tube on the "A". There are lots of ways to id, but I do need to remember the number of bars in the grille thing, though I can't it when I need to.

It's pretty much size. The oldtimers always told me that a "B" was 2/3 of an "A" in size, power, weight, and price. In '48, they looked quite a bit alike, the "B" having a 6 volt electrical system and the "A" 12 volts. Both were offered in gasoline and distillate versions.

Even though the "body" looks the same from distance , parts are larger scale and won't interchange. Engine in A is over 300cu. in. Engine in '48 B is 190 cu. in.. A weighs around 5000# dry...B weighs 4000# so some of the A's additional power will be offset by having to haul around another 1000# of weight. Wheel and tire dia. are same. Like other post said , B is 2/3,s of an A.Prices are almost identicle.
