Do you have a parts breakdown illustration? It's going to be a whole lot easier to discern the possible problems if you do. It will be a tougher job if you do not. If you are talking the countershaft, and not the sliding gear shaft, it is carried on either end by a large tapered roller bearing. The sliding gear shaft runs in staright, not tapered, bearings. Too much endplay will indeed make a tapered bearing howl as it tries to run in a larger cone radius than designed. Too little endplay and they'll stay quiet until they lose some metal, then it's too late because the bearing roller is out of form and will need to be replaced. There are also two flat roller bearings on the shaft used to carry the cluster idler gear (inside the idler gear's bore), but since they are straight roller bearings, they have no affect on endplay. Only the cone bearings handle the end load. There is also a thrust washer/spacer just inside the pulley end cone bearing. If that thrust washer has been worn or destroyed, you could have endplay like you are seeing. If it has run with that excessive endplay for a while, think real hard before you re-install those bearings. I'll bet the cone races are worn along with the bearings, and it might still hown when you get it back together. Consider new bearings and cones, but you'll know for sure when you get it apart.
